Repetições e diferenças na ordem pandêmica Por Francisco Leocádio (English version at the end)

“ A repetição não é generalidade.” ( Gilles Deleuze)

Repetitions and differences in the pandemic order
By Francisco Leocádio

" Repetition is not generality." ( Gilles Deleuze)

During the first few months of confinement in the pandemic, I had a distrustful relationship with the street. The social isolation rules that were implemented plus the still unclear news I read about how the virus was spreading made me afraid to set foot outside my home. I read that on sidewalks on hospital streets in China high levels of Covid-19 had been detected in the air. In those days wearing masks was not yet a preventive measure to be followed by the entire population. So going outside, even in front of my house, was a dangerous condition for me and I believe for many people as well. When I finally felt safe to go to the square again, I did not take any drawing materials with me. I was afraid of contaminating the paper, the pencil, the brush.

Little by little, thanks to the discoveries of science, recommendations from the OMS, I expanded my movements, and finally, I went to the square to draw, already wearing a mask and face shield. But this does not mean that I was fully at ease to finally make drawings for hire. The first few times, and there were several, my themes were linked to my position in the square to sunbathe. After all, it was necessary to activate the body to produce vitamin D to guarantee immunity. The pleasure in drawing had to be conditioned to this mission. So, I had to sit on the benches that were exposed to the incidence of sunlight, and the available seats were few and far between.

With this limitation of options to be in the square, the themes that appeared in front of me were also limited, apparently. Even though São Salvador Square is a small jewel of Rio de Janeiro, the subjects that were in my field of vision were not very diverse. Thus came the series of 12 drawings below that cover the months of April 2020 through July 2021. They are variations of the beautiful fountain in the center of the square. According to the State Institute of Cultural Heritage, the piece, which has traces of the style characteristic of the Napoleon III era, was executed in the French foundry Val d'Osne, and installed in the square in the early 1960s.

To speak of a repetition of the theme would be a reduction without much thought; after all, no day is like another. The fountain may even be in the same place for decades, but the designer is not. Every day was and is an achievement, overcoming fears in such a difficult period. Drawing and still being aware of safety protocols, watching the mask in the correct position, avoiding touching elements other than the drawing material, managing the alcohol sprayer and the brush with the water reservoir. Seeing the drawings today, in sequence, I didn't stop to think about how different each drawing of the fountain is. Of course, the most obvious elements, such as the use of different techniques, changes in framing, time spent drawing, each factor listed interferes in the result. But there are others, linked to the urban scene, to the context, to the use that citizens make of the fountain's surroundings. These are ethnographies that may be more evident some days, on other days they do not figure clearly in the drawing.  Although they interfere in my way of apprehending the same object. This multiplies the faces to be appreciated of a theme that is not so limited, and proves to me that I still have a lot to draw of this fountain.
